For a long time we have used conventional sandblasting and stripping methods to strip coatings, remove corrosion and etch surfaces for our powder coating process. Today we tested our new dustless sandblaster. This new method utilizes a 3000 psi pressure washer to suction sand though a special nozzle, allowing for higher pressure and quicker sandblasting. Not only does it blast better and faster, but the water from the pressure washer keeps the surface cool. This prevents sheet metal from warping. The 70 grit sand gives the item a nice etched surface for the powder to stick or ‘bite’ to.
There are more benefits from this process. The water keeps old coating particulates, dust and sand from getting in the air. This is a much better solution for the operator. It eliminates all adverse side effects from breathing in harmful sand and paint particles often associated with sandblasting. The process also eliminates any need to use chemicals to strip or perform labor intensive media blasting – within a sandblasting or media blasting cabinet.
As you can see from the photos below, the sand removed the rust from this heavily corroded brake rotor very nicely. We spent approximately 20 seconds sandblasting the area. It removed the rust quickly and easily. This will allow us to do much larger items such as roll cages, bodys and frames that we would not have been able to do before.
