3.0t PCV Coolant Leak
We performed a diagnostic on a 2013 Audi S4 3.0T the other day. The customer was complaining of loosing coolant, however there were no leaks on the ground. After the pressure test was complete on the cooling system, we could not see any leaks. We also observed the exhaust and found a small amount of coolant vapor coming from the exhaust pipes. We knew it had to be internal. We removed the super charger and pressure tested the internal intercooler. No leaks. We saw a little coolant around the PCV / breather / oil separator and knew, where the problem was located.
Upon removing the 3.0T PCV, all the the lost coolant poured out from all the seals and the internal cavity. Bingo, we had found our leak. The PCV breather in this vehicle is under the super charger, which has a tremendous amount of heat. The PCV also has coolant lines sealed off underneath the unit. The heat is what causes these seals to fail, typically around 100,000 miles.
While performing this repair we also noticed that the valves have some pretty substantial carbon build up. This is a great time to do this service since we already have the super charger off the engine.
