Mercedes Brief History
Mercedes-Benz has been producing luxury automobiles for over 100 years. Not only did the company practically invent the automobile, they are also responsible for the internal combustion engine.
Two men named Gottlieb Daimler and Karl Benz were trying to rid the world from horse-drawn wagons. In 1886, they built the archetype of the modern engine through synchronous and independent research and development. A wealthy Austrian businessman named Emil Jellinek became interested in these automobiles. Daimler and his chief engineer named Wilhelm Maybach’s work had pleased Mr. Jellinek so much so that he approached the two men to produce a large number of automobiles in exchange for a change to Mercedes from Daimler, which was the name of Jellinek’s daughter, and the right to change the design of the automobile in addition to the right to resell the automobiles some European countries, such as Belgium, France, and Austria.
Mercedes-Benz has become especially well-known for their limousines. The Mercedes- Benz team has also many different innovations but is primarily known for the simple design of the four cylinder engine. A man named Wilhelm Maybach perfected the four stroke gasoline engine 28 years after the prototype was produced. He built an engine for Daimler that was only to be used in boats. Eventually, that engine would propel air, water, and land vehicles.
In the meantime, Mr. Benz was working on a horizontally opposed, four cylinder piston engine. Some of the benefits over the inline engine that the horizontal design enjoyed were the related dynamics and room. There was more room for other devices such as superchargers or turbos, a lower center of gravity, and fewer vibrations as a result of the firing order and the opposed horizontal placement of the pistons.
In 1923, the OB 2 diesel engine was produced. The first diesel truck was introduced in 1923. Soon thereafter, in 1936, Mr. Benz and Mr. Daimler produced the first passenger automobile in the world that was powered by a diesel engine known as the 260 D model. Next to follow were many different improvements to the 260 D. However, as a result of WW II, the requests from German manufacturers for diesel engines that were more fuel efficient were hampered.
Following the end of the war, in 1946, Mercedes- Benz produced their 170 V model. Mercedes-Benz introduced some of their best looking automobiles including the 300SL and the 190. In 1959, their first compact roadster set a new world record for a diesel powered automobile. They also introduced the famous gull winged model that is making a comeback with the introduction of the SLC model. The 300 SL was the first production automobile to take advantage of the early technology of fuel injection.
The world had become concerned with overall automobile pollution and the effects of CO2 emissions during the 1980’s.
In 1985, Mercedes- Benz was one of the first companies comply with pollution regulations by introducing a three way, closed loop catalytic converter.
Fuel injection systems replaced carburetors and diesel automobiles had changed to four valve exhaust/intake systems during the early 1990’s. In order to further reduce CO2 emissions, in 2005, Mercedes-Benz introduced the BlueTec system. Also in 2005, the A 200 Turbo engine for the A Klasse was introduced.
Mercedes-Benz was the first to introduce ESP and ABS systems on its automobiles. The DiesOtto engine delivers the benefits of both diesel and gasoline systems and features variable combustion chambers.
